The sound of trotters tapping on tiles echoed along the hallway. Ham appeared, well-dressed and huffing like heâd run a marathon. âS-sorry to interrupt f-folks. I have news on the monster.â He flicked on the wallmounted screen. It filled with a close-up of the tear-stained faces of a man and woman.
âPlease, if you see our daughter, call 555-HELP. We need Amy here with us. That vicious shar-wolf has kidnapped our baby. Weâre beside ourselves! Help us bring her home!â
Jim Ruffnutt, the water buffalo reporter at NYC4U News appeared on the screen holding a microphone. âThere you have it, folks. The beast that terrorised Brooklyn Bridge yesterday is still causing havoc. Police Chief Pumpkin, have you got anything to add?â
The camera panned to a portly toad dressed in police uniform. âWeâre all out of leads.â Police Chief Pumpkin puffed his throat and scratched his head with a webbed finger. âThis creature leaves a trail of destruction in its path, but we canât locate its lair. Weâre at a loss.â
Ham turned the TV off and watched the others for their response.
âWe have to do something.â Romeo pushed his chair back and stood up. âThat girl wonât stand a chance with the shar-wolf.â
âSo, youâre in?â Beth said. âYouâll join our team?â
âYes,â Romeo said. âI think youâre right. The city needs us.â
âYay! Thatâs great news!â Beth cheered.
âIâve been scanning CCTV footage from last night and found images of the shar-wolf at Dylanâs Candy Bar,â Ham explained as he showed them a video on an iPad. âThis was taken around closing time at ten oâclock.â
It seemed the shar-wolf had used the cover of darkness to sneak back into the city. Amy and her family were leaving Dylanâs Candy Bar, the flagship store on Third Avenue, when the girl had been snatched. As they watched, the shar-wolf plucked Amy from the street then took off. The girl was screaming her lungs out, as were her parents.
The video ended and Ham closed the iPad case. âThat was the last anyone has seen of her,â he said.
âWhat do you think he wants with her?â Romeo asked.
âNot sure, but he does have a habit of taking kids,â Beth said. âIf not for you, Iâd be where Amy is right now.â
âYouâd be worth mega-bucks if you were up for ransom,â Tulip said.
âThat could be a motive,â Beth agreed. âEither way, we canât sit around waiting to find out. We need to visit Dylanâs to search for candy, I mean, clues. Ham, you stay and monitor the cameras. Let us know if you spot the shar-wolf.â
âAbsolutely,â Ham said.
Before they headed off, Beth handed Romeo and Tulip a tiny earpiece and a micro-transmitter shaped like a caterpillar cocoon. She lifted her hair out of the way and fitted a device in her ear. âThis will help us communicate. It also has tracking capabilities so Ham can keep tabs on us in case weâre in danger or get lost.â
âI really think youâre worrying about nothing,â Tulip said.
âYou donât get it, do you?â Beth said.
